Every cable brand has a top shelf, and most top shelves are exercises in diminishing returns dressed up in fancy jackets. Zonotone's upper range is different, and the reason is scale. These are physically enormous cables built around conductor cross-sections that change what an amplifier and speaker can do together. You do not buy them for a tweak. You buy them when the system is finished and you want to hear what it was capable of all along.
The contenders
The Granster SP-8800 is the veteran of the group, a high grade hybrid design with a finely controlled multi-strand layout. The Grandio SP-07 brings 7N class copper to a 3.0sq hybrid conductor. And the 7NSP-Shupreme X is the current flagship: 9.5sq per conductor, a hybrid of Zonotone's best metals, terminated with the company's own LUG-series connectors, which are among the finest speaker terminations made anywhere in the world.
Listening
We auditioned all three on a high current solid state amplifier driving full range floorstanders, with a tube integrated subbed in for a second evening. The SP-8800 set the baseline: big, even handed, and immediately comfortable. Beethoven's Ninth, the Abbado recording with the Berlin Philharmonic, had the massed strings layered front to back rather than smeared into a wall, and the timpani in the scherzo landed with proper impact.
The Grandio SP-07 traded a little of the 8800's warmth for resolution. On Diana Krall's Live in Paris, the hall ambience around "Let's Fall in Love" extended further back, and the texture of the bass player's strings, the actual scrape of finger on wound metal, became a distinct event rather than a suggestion. It is the choice for systems that already have body to spare.
Then we installed the Shupreme X and understood what the fuss is about. Bass was not deeper so much as effortless, the way a large engine is effortless; Massive Attack's "Angel" pressurised the room at a level that had the smaller cables audibly straining, and the Shupreme simply idled. Yet the surprise was the quiet end of the spectrum. On Bill Evans' "Peace Piece", the decay of each chord hung in complete silence, unaccompanied by the low level hash we had stopped noticing until it was gone. That combination, unlimited power and unlimited quiet, is what this class of cable is actually selling.
Verdict
These are not cables for every system, and we will tell you honestly if yours is not ready for them. But in a resolving, well powered system, the Shupreme X is one of the few products we have stocked that made customers go silent and then start over from track one. The SP-8800 and Grandio SP-07 get you most of the way there for less, and all three are built to your length in the workshop.
