Turn any piece of hi-fi gear around and the power inlet tells you exactly which cable it needs, once you can read the markings. In Australia the wall end is always the AS/NZS 3112 flat three pin mains plug, and the equipment end is almost always one of five IEC types: C13 on most components, the C7 figure 8 on small double insulated gear, the C5 cloverleaf on power bricks, the notched C15 on hot running equipment, and the large C19 on serious amplifiers. This guide decodes each type, explains why the current and temperature ratings genuinely matter, and covers when an upgraded lead earns its price.
The wall end: the Australian mains plug
Australia runs a nominal 230V, 50Hz supply that almost everyone still calls 240V, and the standard mains plug follows AS/NZS 3112: two flat angled pins for active and neutral, plus a longer flat earth pin, rated 10A in domestic use. Compliant plugs made in the last two decades have insulated pin shanks near the body, a safety measure that keeps fingers away from live metal on a half withdrawn plug. At 240V a 10A plug and socket can deliver roughly 2,300 watts, comfortably beyond any domestic amplifier we have ever sold a cable for.
What varies is build quality. The moulded plug on a stock lead uses thin brass pins, a pressure fit and a strain relief that hardens and cracks with age. A quality rewireable AU plug, with plated copper pins, a real cord grip and a housing that survives being stepped on, holds its contact pressure for decades. Every cable we build is fitted with a proper Australian plug at the wall end as standard, because a serious IEC connector fed by a shabby wall plug is money half spent.
C13 into C14: the everyday inlet
The C13 is the familiar three pin connector on the end of the cable, and it mates with the C14 inlet recessed into the back of your equipment. Rated at 10A and 70 degrees Celsius, it covers the vast majority of hi-fi: integrated amplifiers, DACs, CD players, streamers and most power amplifiers of moderate output. At Australian voltage the current rating is almost never the constraint; a 10A connector at 240V has about 2,300 watts of headroom. What separates a moulded stock lead from a hand built one is contact quality: how much copper is in the pins, how firmly they grip, and how the plating survives a humid Sydney summer.
C7, the figure 8
The C7 is the small two pin connector shaped like the number eight, rated at just 2.5A. It has no earth pin because the equipment it serves is double insulated, and you will find it on CD players, some streamers, tuners, radios and plenty of turntable power supplies. Two bench notes. First, C7 leads are treated as disposable, and the moulded ones genuinely are: thin conductors, loose fit, contacts that tarnish within a couple of years. Second, polarity matters more than people expect on a two pin connection, and many listeners hear a consistent difference reversing the plug in the socket, a leakage and grounding effect rather than imagination. A properly built C7 lead is a small, cheap upgrade that compact components respond to out of proportion to its price.
C5, the cloverleaf
The C5 is the three pin cloverleaf, nicknamed Mickey Mouse after the silhouette, rated at 2.5A. It lives on laptop power bricks, projectors and a handful of compact network players and slim AV components, usually on the external power supply rather than the component itself. Because the brick sits between the cable and the audio circuitry, an upgraded C5 lead is the one place we will happily talk you out of spending: the switch mode supply is the bottleneck, not the last metre of flex. If your streamer takes a cloverleaf, put the budget toward a better linear supply for it first.
C15: the notched, high temperature type
The C15 carries the same 10A rating as the C13 but is certified to 120 degrees Celsius, and its matching C16 inlet has a notch opposite the earth pin that a C13 cannot clear. It exists for equipment that runs genuinely hot: certain power amplifiers, some power conditioners, and any chassis where the inlet sits near a heat source. If your component has the notched inlet, the cable must be C15, full stop. One useful quirk worth knowing: a C15 connector also fits a standard C14 inlet, so a C15 terminated cable covers both patterns. The serious connector lines, Oyaide's rhodium plated range and Furutech's FI series, are made in the pattern, so specifying it costs nothing in build quality.
C19 and C20: the 16A heavyweights
The C19 and C20 pair is the large rectangular coupler rated at 16A, found on big power amplifiers, power conditioners and distribution blocks. At 240V that is close to 3,700 watts, but the headline figure undersells the real advantage: the contact area inside a C19 is far larger than a C13, so resistance at the joint is lower and the connection tolerates sustained high current without heating. On an amplifier that pulls hard at dynamic peaks, that larger, firmer interface is worth having, and it is why we terminate so many of our high current builds in C19.

Why the ratings matter
Safety first, because this is mains power. A connector run beyond its temperature rating degrades its contacts, and degraded contacts heat further, which is how the failure cycle starts. Using a C13 in an inlet designed for C15 is the wrong temperature class for the equipment, whatever the forums say about it fitting. Current ratings are more forgiving in hi-fi, since almost nothing domestic approaches 10A at 240V, but the connector designed for the load always runs cooler and lasts longer.
Sound quality follows from the same physics. Every connector is a joint, and every joint adds resistance where the amplifier draws hardest, at the waveform peaks. Oxidised, loosely gripping contacts add more, and unevenly. Rhodium plated pure copper contacts, the standard in the Oyaide and Furutech bodies we fit, hold their surface for decades and grip firmly enough that the joint stops being a variable. This is why two cables built from identical wire can measure and sound different: the difference is at the ends.
When is an upgraded cable worth it?
Our honest order of operations: power amplifier first, because it draws the most current and sags hardest against a resistive lead; integrated amplifiers and receivers next; then sources, where the gain is a lower noise floor rather than extra current. A better lead will not rescue a system with problems elsewhere, and we would rather sell you the affordable end of the range and see you happy than the flagship and see you disappointed.
