Nowhere in a hi-fi system does a cable work harder than between the turntable and the phono stage. A moving coil cartridge might output a third of a millivolt, a signal so small that the cable carrying it is less a wire than an antenna for every electromagnetic disturbance in the room. This is why phono cables sound different, why they sound different in different systems, and why getting this half metre right changes more than any other single upgrade in an analogue chain.
The Phasemation CC-1200
Phasemation's entire business is low level signal: step-up transformers, phono stages, cartridges. The CC-1200 is their dedicated phono cable, a balanced transmission design conceived to move a cartridge's minute voltage to the phono amplifier without loss or contamination, and available with RCA, XLR or DIN terminations. Between a mid compliance MC cartridge and a balanced phono input, the CC-1200 was revelatory. On our Japanese pressing of We Get Requests, Oscar Peterson's piano had a solidity and right hand sparkle that made the previous cable sound like it was playing from the next room. The balanced topology earns its keep here: hum rejection on the long run to the phono stage was total.
The Oyaide PA-2075 V2
The PA-2075 V2 takes a different path. Built on Oyaide's 102SSC copper with a dual shielded structure, it is offered as DIN to RCA or RCA to RCA, with XLR by special request, and it ships with Furutech FP-209-10(R) ground lugs, a detail that tells you Oyaide understands the real world of tonearms and grounding tabs. On a classic direct drive turntable with a straight tonearm, the PA-2075 delivered Bill Evans' "Waltz for Debby" with the Village Vanguard's room ambience wonderfully intact, glasses and murmur and all, and with a lower noise floor than the ageing arm cable it replaced.
Choosing between them comes down to topology more than quality. If your phono stage offers balanced inputs, or your cartridge is a very low output design, the CC-1200's balanced transmission is the technically superior route and sounds it. If you are running a conventional single ended chain, particularly with a DIN terminated tonearm, the PA-2075 V2 is the one we reach for, and its included ground hardware saves an evening of improvisation either way.
Verdict
Both cables remind us that vinyl's reputation for warmth is partly the reputation of bad phono cabling. Get this link right and the format's real virtues, its flow, its texture, its sense of continuous breath, come through undiminished.
