Zonotone Accessories Just Landed: Headshell, Leads and a Proper Earth

Zonotone's Z-Shell-10 headshell, three LW lead sets and Grandio Earth-1 ground wire explained by cartridge mass, wiring and the hum problems they can actually solve.

Turntable upgrades do not get much smaller than a headshell lead or a ground wire, and that is exactly why they are easy to buy badly. These Zonotone parts solve specific problems, so the arm, cartridge and wiring should decide which ones you need.

Z-Shell-10: check the mass before the colour

The Zonotone Z-Shell-10 is a $578 machined aluminium alloy headshell with gold-plated contact pins, slotted cartridge mounts and a universal SME-style bayonet fitting. At 15 grams, it is a rigid, substantial shell rather than a lightweight swap for every arm.

That mass is the first specification to check. Add the cartridge and mounting hardware to the headshell figure, then consider the tonearm's effective mass and the cartridge's compliance. A heavy shell on a low-mass arm can move the arm-cartridge resonance lower than intended. A medium-mass arm and a suitable cartridge are the more natural match.

The bayonet fitting only helps if your turntable has a removable SME-type headshell. It does not adapt a fixed arm or a P-mount cartridge. After fitting it, you still need to set overhang, alignment, tracking force and anti-skate. The slotted holes make that adjustment possible; they do not make it automatic.

Three lead sets, with real material differences

All three Zonotone lead sets contain four colour-coded wires with gold-plated terminals. Each uses a 0.31sq conductor in a flexible 1.4mm sleeve, so the practical choice is conductor blend and budget, not whether one set will reach your cartridge pins.

The 6NLW-Granster costs $109 and combines 6NCu, HiFC, PCUHD and OFC. It is the sensible replacement for brittle or generic leads. The Grandio LW-1 costs $202 and uses 7NCu, PCUHD, silver-coated OFC, tin-plated high-purity copper and OFC. The Shupreme LW-1 costs $310 and moves to an 8NCu, PCUHD, silver-coated OFC and OFC blend.

I would match the lead tier to the cartridge and phono stage rather than assume the flagship is automatically the right purchase. Whichever set you fit, support the terminal with fine tweezers or suitable pliers and pull on the connector, never the wire. Follow the colours: white is left positive, blue left ground, red right positive and green right ground. Photograph the original wiring first.

Grandio Earth-1: a ground lead, not a hum cure-all

The Grandio Earth-1 is a one-metre, spade-to-spade ground wire costing $992. Its 3.4sq five-material conductor combines 7NCu, HiFC, PCUHD, tin-plated high-purity copper and OFC, with gold-plated spades at both ends. It is a serious piece of wire for a simple but important job.

Before buying any ground lead, find the hum properly. A turntable with a ground post normally needs a connection to the phono stage or the grounding point specified by its manufacturer. A loose RCA shield, a failed cable or a ground loop between mains-powered components can sound similar. If touching the tonearm changes the hum, note that as a clue, not a diagnosis.

With everything switched off, connect the two ground posts securely and route the lead away from mains cords where practical. If the system has no turntable ground post, or the hum is present with every source, do not expect a new earth wire to fix it. Never disconnect a protective mains earth while experimenting.

Which upgrade comes first

Start with setup and damaged wiring. Replace perished leads before buying a heavier shell. Fix a missing ground connection before considering a premium ground wire. Once those basics are right, the Z-Shell and LW-series let you match the hardware to a genuinely resolving analogue front end.

These parts, phono cables and the rest of the turntable hardware are in Arms, Carts and Phono. If you send me the arm and cartridge models through the custom order form, I can check the mass and termination questions before you spend.
