SAEC Solid Turntable Mat

Most turntable mats are rubber, felt or leather. The original SS-300, released around 1978, took the opposite position: put the record on something rigid and precise, and let nothing move that should not. The SS-300Mk2 is that idea rebuilt with current metalworking. The material is Alhais, a high precision aluminium alloy from Kobe Steel with low residual stress and exceptional surface flatness. Residual stress matters because a mat with internal stress will ring or warp over time. Each mat is machined individually to 30 micron tolerance, then anodised. The five circular holes in the surface are not decoration. They are positioned to break up the mat's own resonant modes while preserving dynamic balance, so the platter spins exactly as it did before.

Japanese dealer Sound Hunter auditioned it with SAEC's SRS-9 record stabiliser: "Bass sank deeper, trumpet and female vocals became more extended and supple, and the soundstage transformed into something far more expansive. Compared to the naked setup it does not sound like the same source. It is not that the character changes. It is that the factors degrading the sound are removed, and the music comes out with its freshness intact."

One honest note: it raises record height by 5.5mm, so you will need to adjust tonearm height after fitting. Ten minutes of setup for a platter surface machined like a precision instrument component.
